Oberspeltach and the surrounding area

This is Oberspeltach on a plan from 1828, redrawn 1928 and with changes till 1970. "red" marked we are.

Where is Oberspeltach?

In Baden-Württemberg, not far from Bavaria, roughly speaking about halfway between Stuttgart and Nuremberg. We haven't moved far from where we were, I just have a little further to work (the red dotted line).

1= our new home
2= where I work
3= DIY, furniture and electrical stores
4= supermarket
5= motorway Heilbronn-Nuremberg
6= Crailsheim

Oberspeltach and a few other larger and smaller villages are grouped together to form Frankenhardt.

In case you wonder why I don't take the "diretissima" to Ilshofen, the area in between used to be US forces' territory and was therefore out of bounds. After the troops left, the area became a nature reserve. In the summer I go the other way round, a little shorter in distance but not in time as the roads are winding and in winter not so recommendable.

The village was badly damaged during the war, with only a few timbered houses surviving. Most of the houses are therefore 50s and 60s with a new housing area between us and the sportsground (not on this map).

When the weather is fine I could go directly by bicycle, in theory...

The highest point is the Burgberg (literally castle mountain), just north of Oberspeltach, which is 534 m above sea level. There are traces of a Celtic settlement but the main attraction is the tower with its 360° panoramic view over the area. And it's a maze of bicycle tracks in which I could easily get lost without my elderly neighbours who take me on a 1 hour round whenever I happen to be around when they take their daily exercise.

Below is a view of our end of Oberspeltach.

If you look closely you can see our house. Here it is after zooming in:

Oberspeltach joined Frankenhardt in the seventies. It had been formed by the fusion of Honhardt and Gründelhardt. Due to the rivalry between the two, the new name Frankenhardt was created.

Both villages consider themselves the "main" village...

Here are some pictures of Honhardt:

Church, pub, school and "castle"

And this is Gründelhardt:

Town hall, doctors' and dentist's surgeries, pub
As in Oberspeltach, the pubs are actually excellent restaurants too and even in some of the smaller villages the menu brings in visitors from all around. We haven't tried them all out yet...
There's a lot of useful information under the official site of Frankenhardt (only in German)
